Iring Ronan from the Galway Garda Station car park to report on the meeting, and I’m laughing so hard, I have to use my inhaler. He’s bewildered at first, especially by the skin-to-skin thing, but he gets up the viral video on his desk computer and loves it.

He chuckles. ‘They’ll want Garda O’Donoghue on TV next.’

‘On your own head be it. She’s a great person and a fine officer, but she’s a bit of a loose cannon in terms of saying what she thinks…’

‘Yeah, I remember, but for some reason she doesn’t offend. She’s entirely guileless.’

‘I’m not sure it’s innocence, it’s hard to tell, but either way she feels very strongly about things and is not shy about making her point, so an interview about the horse could easily turn into a TED Talk on the patriarchy, veganism, animal testing of cosmetics, over-fishing, naked shamans… She’s got a lot of thoughts about a lot of things that may not exactly reflect the Garda viewpoint,’ I warn.

‘Hmm, well, it’s going to be out of our hands. It is already. It’s at’ – there’s a pause as he checks – ‘750,000 views already. They’re bound to want to interview her on the morning shows.’

‘Well, everyone except Duckie was delighted with it, so let’s hope it yields some results.’

‘Indeed. Thanks, Mags. You and your officers never cease to amaze me. Right then…’

‘Ronan?’ I say, before he has the chance to ring off.

‘Yes, Mags?’

‘If Zoë finds Chance Your Arm, will we get an extra officer, do you think?’

He laughs. He knows what I’m talking about. ‘We’ll see, we’ll see.’ But he goes off the line without promising anything.
